Nordhavnen

The City of Copenhagen called for an international competition to redevelop Nordhavnen’s 260 ha existing dockland as a waterfront city for 80,000 people in 50 years. The proposal conceived the new city as a series of islands, each with a distinct urban function and character: Arts and Cultural, Residential, Retail and Commercial, Marina, Canal, Beach, Wildlife Habitat, and Quay islands. These islands were inter-connected by bridges, completed with pedestrian walks, bike paths and public promenades. Together, these islands created an enriched urban plan for the waterfront city equipped with the-state-of-the-arts amenities. The design employed sustainable design strategies such as bio-energy, geo-thermal, water harvesting and green street techniques. This received an exhibition in Copenhagen, in 2008.
